JPG compression in three steps

The quality setting controls how much detail is preserved versus how small the file becomes.

FORMAT KNOWLEDGE

What happens when you compress a JPG?

LokalPix decodes the JPG and re-encodes the pixels at the chosen quality level.

JPG

Lossy re-encoding

Compression here means another round of lossy JPG encoding. Existing artefacts are not removed.

QUALITY

Encoder setting, not a quality measure

The percentage controls the encoder. 80 % is a good compromise for most photos; below that, blocking artefacts may appear.

IMPORTANT

A smaller result is not guaranteed

The output can be smaller, the same size, or larger than the original, depending on the image content and its source compression.

FORMAT IN DEPTH

JPG compression in depth

Technical background for a deliberate quality choice.

How JPG compresses

JPEG divides the image into 8×8 pixel blocks and transforms them using the discrete cosine transform. Quantisation reduces coefficients; less important detail is discarded in the process.

When compression helps

If the source file comes from a camera or editor and was encoded at a high quality setting, re-encoding at 75–85 % can produce noticeably smaller files.

When compression does not help

If the file was already heavily compressed, the result will be similar in size or larger. Re-encoding then adds another lossy step without reducing file size.

What is lost during compression

Existing JPG artefacts remain. EXIF metadata are removed by default. The original image cannot be reconstructed exactly from the result.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Questions about JPG

Answers about compression, quality, and privacy.

Will my file always be smaller?

No. The result depends on image content, source compression, and the chosen quality level. LokalPix shows an honest savings badge after processing, indicating the actual percentage saved or added.

Which quality should I choose?

80 % is a practical starting point for photos. Lower it for smaller files; raise it when visible artefacts are a concern.

Are metadata preserved?

Metadata are removed by default.

Can I compress several JPG files?

Yes. Up to 20 files can be processed in one batch and downloaded individually or together as a ZIP archive.

Are resolution and aspect ratio preserved?

Yes. LokalPix does not change the pixel dimensions during compression.
