What happens when JPG becomes PNG?

LokalPix decodes the JPG and stores the already rendered pixels losslessly as PNG. Earlier JPG losses are not reversed.

Lossy compression

JPG reduces file size by discarding image information during encoding. Existing artefacts then become part of the visible image.

PNG

Lossless output

PNG stores the decoded pixels without another lossy encoding step. For photographs, the result is therefore often larger than the JPG.

Conversion cannot reconstruct removed detail or create transparency. It only changes the file format of the pixels that remain.

How JPG works

JPEG was designed for continuous-tone images such as photographs. Encoding divides the image into blocks and reduces detail intended to be less noticeable to the human eye. Repeated JPG saves can introduce additional loss.

How PNG works

PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression. It is particularly suitable for screenshots, diagrams, text, and graphics with sharp edges. PNG supports an alpha channel, but a JPG source contains no transparency that can be restored.

Why the PNG may be larger

JPG is highly space-efficient for photographs because it discards information. PNG must preserve every decoded pixel value losslessly. The PNG can therefore be much larger without looking better.

What remains lost?

PNG encoding adds no new lossy image compression, but it cannot repair previous JPG loss. Missing detail, original colour values, and any earlier transparency remain unavailable. Metadata and JPEG-specific structures are not transferred by default.

Does converting to PNG improve quality?

No. PNG stores the pixels decoded from the JPG without further loss, but it cannot recover detail that was discarded earlier. Existing JPG artefacts remain part of the image.

Why is the PNG file larger?

PNG is lossless and is usually less storage-efficient than JPG for photographs. A larger file does not mean the image has gained detail.

Will the image get a transparent background?

No. JPG has no alpha channel. Converting to PNG does not automatically turn existing background pixels transparent.

Are resolution and aspect ratio preserved?

Yes. LokalPix does not intentionally change the pixel dimensions during this conversion.

Are metadata preserved?

Metadata are removed by default. JPEG-specific EXIF structures are not transferred to the PNG file.

Can I convert several JPG files?

Yes. Up to 20 files can be processed in one batch and downloaded individually or together as a ZIP archive.
