FORMAT KNOWLEDGE

What happens when PNG becomes WebP?

LokalPix reads the PNG losslessly and encodes the visible pixels as lossy WebP.

PNG

Lossless source

PNG compresses image data without loss. After reading, pixel values can be reconstructed exactly.

WEBP

Lossy output

WebP uses lossy encoding in this conversion. The selected quality affects file size and visible artefacts.

IMPORTANT

Transparency is conditionally preserved

WebP supports transparency. PNG images with an alpha channel can therefore be output transparently. Check the result for complex cut-outs.

FORMAT IN DEPTH

PNG and WebP compared

Technical background for choosing the right format.

How PNG encodes

PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression. It is well suited to screenshots, diagrams, and graphics with sharp edges, and it supports an alpha channel for transparency.

How WebP encodes

Lossy WebP uses VP8 techniques: spatial prediction, adaptive quantisation, and entropy coding. LokalPix uses the WebP encoder built into your browser.

When WebP makes sense

WebP is useful on websites when the actual output is smaller and browser support is available. Compare file size and visible quality for each specific image.

What is lost?

Lossy WebP encoding can reduce image detail. PNG-specific ancillary data are not transferred by default. The original PNG cannot be reconstructed from the WebP.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Questions about PNG to WebP

Answers about quality, privacy, and format limitations.

Is transparency carried over to WebP?

Yes. WebP supports transparency. If the PNG has an alpha channel it can be transferred to the WebP file. Check the result for complex cut-outs.

Will every WebP be smaller than the PNG?

Not necessarily. The result depends on image content, source compression, and the chosen WebP quality. Compare the actual image.

Which WebP quality should I choose?

90 percent is a practical starting point. Lower it for smaller files; then check fine detail, text, and gradients.

Are resolution and aspect ratio preserved?

Yes. LokalPix does not intentionally change the pixel dimensions during this conversion.

Are metadata preserved?

Metadata are removed by default. PNG-specific ancillary data are not transferred to the WebP file.

Can I convert several PNG files?

Yes. Up to 20 files can be processed in one batch and downloaded individually or together as a ZIP archive.
