FORMAT KNOWLEDGE

What happens when SVG becomes PNG?

LokalPix checks and sanitises the SVG file, renders it in the browser, and saves the result as PNG.

SVG

Vector graphics with security-relevant content

SVG is an XML format for vector graphics. It can contain scripts, external references, event handlers, and other active content.

PNG

Lossless raster image

PNG stores the rendered image as a raster with a fixed resolution. Vector information is lost during rasterisation.

IMPORTANT

Strict SVG sanitisation

LokalPix rejects SVG files containing scripts, external references, event handlers, embedded styles, or other active content. This includes animations and foreign objects.

FORMAT IN DEPTH

SVG and PNG compared

Technical background on rasterisation and security.

How SVG is structured

SVG is an XML-based vector format that describes paths, shapes, text, and effects through expressions. It can contain scripts, external resources, and event handlers.

How LokalPix sanitises SVG

LokalPix parses the SVG and rejects script, foreignObject, style, and link elements, as well as on* attributes, external href references, and CSS url() expressions. Only clean SVGs are rendered.

What is lost during rasterisation

PNG stores the image at a fixed pixel resolution. Vector information is lost. The PNG cannot be converted back into an editable SVG.

Why PNG can be useful

PNG is more broadly compatible than SVG and suitable for images used in upload forms, documents, or on platforms that do not accept SVG.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

Questions about SVG to PNG

Answers about quality, privacy, and format limitations.

Why is my SVG file rejected?

LokalPix rejects SVG files containing scripts, external references, event handlers, embedded styles, animations, or other active content. Check the file for such elements.

Can I set the output size and resolution?

No. The output size matches the SVG dimensions or, if absent, the viewBox. Scaled output is not currently supported.

Are SVG animations preserved?

No. LokalPix rejects animations (animate, animateMotion, animateTransform, set) and produces a still image.

Are resolution and aspect ratio preserved?

Yes, provided the SVG has explicit dimensions or a viewBox. If both are absent, the result may differ from the expected measurements.

Are metadata preserved?

Metadata are not transferred to the PNG output by default.

Can I convert several SVG files?

Yes. Up to 20 files can be processed in one batch and downloaded individually or together as a ZIP archive.
