What happens when PNG becomes JPG?

LokalPix decodes the PNG in your browser and encodes its visible pixels as JPG. The output is lossy and does not support transparency.

Where PNG came from

PNG was developed in the 1990s as an open, patent-free raster format. Its compression is lossless: the original stored pixel values can be reconstructed after saving.

What PNG does well

PNG is well suited to graphics, screenshots, logos, and images with sharp edges. It supports transparency through an alpha channel and stores common RGB and greyscale images without JPG compression artefacts.

When JPG makes more sense

For photographs with many colour and brightness gradients, JPG usually produces smaller files. This is useful for websites, email, documents, and upload forms that reject PNG files or impose tight size limits.

What is lost during conversion?

The conversion is not lossless. Transparency and PNG-specific ancillary information are discarded. JPG encoding may introduce blocking, colour fringes, and softer edges. The original PNG cannot be reconstructed exactly from the resulting JPG.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPG does not support transparency. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are therefore flattened onto a fixed background colour. Check the result carefully for logos and cut-out subjects.

Which JPG quality should I choose?

90 percent is a practical starting point. Lower it for smaller files or raise it when minimising visible loss matters more. The percentage is an encoder setting, not an exact measure of retained quality.

Are resolution and aspect ratio preserved?

Yes. LokalPix does not intentionally change the pixel dimensions during this conversion, so resolution and aspect ratio are retained.

Is PNG-to-JPG conversion lossless?

No. The PNG is decoded without loss, but the following JPG encoding is lossy. Even the highest setting does not create a technically identical copy.

Are metadata preserved?

Metadata are removed by default. PNG and JPG use different metadata structures, so LokalPix does not transfer PNG-specific ancillary information into the JPG file.

Can I convert several PNG files?

Yes. Up to 20 files can be processed in one batch and downloaded individually or together as a ZIP archive.
